Spring Car Buying Season: Why March Is One of the Best Times to Shop

As winter fades and temperatures begin to climb across the Midwest, March marks the unofficial start of the spring car buying season.

As winter fades and temperatures begin to climb across the Midwest, March marks the unofficial start of the spring car buying season. Dealerships begin refreshing their inventory, manufacturers roll out incentives, and buyers who postponed purchases during the winter months start returning to showrooms.

One reason March is such an active time for car sales is the arrival of new model inventory. Many dealers begin receiving fresh shipments from manufacturers in late winter, which means they are also eager to move remaining vehicles from the previous model year. That often translates into strong discounts, promotional financing offers, and trade-in incentives for buyers who are ready to act.

For shoppers in places like South Dakota, Iowa, and Minnesota, weather also plays a role. Winter storms and icy roads tend to slow down vehicle shopping in January and February. By March, road conditions improve and buyers are more willing to visit dealerships or test drive vehicles.

Another factor is tax refund season. Many consumers receive federal tax refunds during this time and use the extra funds as a down payment on a vehicle. This combination of increased cash flow and dealership incentives can create ideal buying conditions.

For buyers considering a new or used vehicle, March offers a rare balance: dealers are motivated to sell, inventory is expanding, and shoppers are entering the market again after winter’s slowdown.
